Description

My copy of Book 13 (1951 ed) attributes the tune Duran Rangers to “Manuscript in the possession of Ian Jamieson. Galashiels.” On the database the composer is “J. Jamieson”. Is there a discrepancy here? Regards Bill Unger

It gets worse - first of all, there are indicators that “Duran Rangers” is identical to a tune named “Durham Rangers” (not in our database) and to “The Durham Rangers Hornpipe” in our database, as the latter plus “Duran Ranger” are both used in recordings for “Duran Ranger”, the dance. Seems the tune “Sherwood Rangers” (in the database) is identical too. Sources for this Duran/Durham relationship are https://thesession.org/tunes/3376 and https://tunearch.org/wiki/Annotation:Durham_Rangers These sources indicate that Jamieson is only the collector and “J Jamieson” as a composer is incorrect. Seems to be a traditional, really. What shall we do?

The “Duran” in “The Duran Ranger” is a mis-spelling of “Durham”. The “Durham Ranger” is a popular salmon-fishing fly. See, for example, https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datei:Durham_Ranger_salmon_fly.jpg.

The tune is quite obviously traditional and should be marked as such in the database. I’ve done that and also added an explicit link to the annotations page in the TTA.

Nah, Anselm, we are not there yet with the multitude of questions I had. Still, there seem to be identical tunes. I listened to some recordings for different tune names, namely: “Duran Rangers” tune 470, listed in the recording “The Duran Ranger” by Neil Barron and his Scottish Dance Band; then “The Durham Rangers Hornpipe” tune 5430, listed in a recording for the same dance “The Duran Ranger” by Bobby Brown and The Scottish Accent … and … those tunes are identical (both the first tunes of the set). We would have to join those tunes then?
