Thanks for submitting this (and your other recent issues). I checked that the instructions for La Salle Causeway do mention The Solway Reel as the music and that its linked to the dance entry in SCDDB. So thats seems OK.

I do not have access to the instructions for the dance The Solway Reel, but as SCDDB already links two tunes for it (Donald Ridleys Compliments to Oliver Waugh and The Afterthought) I presume who ever entered the information would also have added a link to the tune The Solway Reel if the dance mentioned that. Though perhaps its just taken as assumed?

When you say “It looks like…” are you confident we are missing that link or just that its suggested by there being dance and tune of the same name? For the moment I will leave this issue open as needed confirmation.

Hi Murrough, first of all, up until now, the dance "La Salle… " was listed as 4x40 in the database. My copy (Madoma) says it is a R4x48. I changed that.
On the issue: all recordings for “The Solway Reel” show “Donald Ridley…” as the lead tune. That part should be fine. None of them uses a tune called “Solway Reel”. To me, we don’t have to look into THIS dance any further.

On to “La Salle…”. As you know, the original copy states: “May be danced to: Solway Reel”. With La Salle (now) being a 4x48 Strathspey, it could well mean that the deviser was talking about a RECORDING of “The Solway Reel” which are as well. We have a tune called “Solway Reel” in the database, but with no further information going along and NO online reference to a tune of that name. It could well be that no tune of that name exists and we better have “Donald Ridley…” as the recommended tune for “La Salle…”, given that the deviser’s recommendation meant “the recording”. Thoughts?

Hi Viktor. I agree my copy of The La Salle Causeway instructions have it as 4x48. But all three linked recordings are shown as R160 which is 4x40.

I think we should at least add an extra info note that the dance was changed from 4x40 to 4x48. Presumably between its Martello Tower and subsequent Madoma publications? In general I think its good practice to mention such changes in the extra info. Are you happy to do that?

I agree the mention of “may be danced to Solway Reel” most likely refers to the recording if there is no other evidence of it being a known tune.

Hi Murrough, of course I will do that! have changed the notes and added recordings of “Solway Reel”. Have changed the lead tune. Sadly enough Keith doesn’t seem to have all Martello publications BUT the one in question ;-) so can’t double check with the original dance version for the time being. I added all publication dates for the Martello books as per the Ontario website to fill some gaps.

I should have the Martello Book 7 – I’m going to have a look tomorrow (i.e., later today) because the dance books are upstairs and I don’t want to disturb Marie.
