Sorry Stephen, where a dance has an alias (or in this case several aliases) the comment in brackets, such as “(spelling)” indicates whether this is perhaps an official alias or just one with variant spelling. That seems to be the case here for the with/without brackets. So the text cannot just be removed, its added automatically by the software. If an alias is marked as an official alternative name there is no extra text, but if there are lots of those it starts to look as if the deviser cannot make up their minds! To my mind the spelling alias is appropriate in this case.

If a dance had a different name before it is wise to keep all the variants in case someone makes a search for a name that appeared on an old programme, etc.

In general, I agree with Murrough that aliases should be kept e.g. after name changes, but I can understand that three additional words compared to the final name chosen by the deviser does not necessarily qualify as a spelling difference (like for Conny and Connie). Thus, I have changed the type of alias from “(spelling)” to “(unofficial)”.

…unless the deviser (Stephen Webb himself ;) claims that “Albert’s Welcome to Potten End” is still an official name of the dance. In this case, I suggest changing it from “(unofficial)” to “(official)”.

Best wishes, Heiko
