Description

This book, first published in 1960 contains 25 dances published in 1740 and collected in the Bodleian Library, Oxford by Jack McConachie who arranged them to conform to modern dancing styles. Yet Arthur’s Seat is wrongly said to be devised by JMcM. Please could you correct. Also, Keith’s diagrams (there are a few of the dances in diagram form) they all have different attribution perhaps Keith you could unify this to say, 1740 Arrgd Jack McConachie Many thanks

Indeed is “Arthur’s Seat” the only dance in the collection that is attributed to McConachie as a deviser. Is this OBVIOUSLY wrong as he can’t be, timelinewise? And, to be honest, I don’t want to bother Keith with amended diagrams for now as they are not “incorrect” in any shape or form and for the time being one can live with “inconsistent” footer info. There is too much work on the plate with other things.

There have been lots of discussions of this on the strathspey mailing list over the ages. Some are linked in the extra info for the dance. One message by Rosemary Coupe is the basis for attributing the dance to McConachie as it was felt that the changes from the original amounted to creating a new dance. I just added a last sentence to that effect in the extra info for those not wanting to wade through earlier discussions. Lets close this.
