Issue 2656: welcome to Ayr

Description

In the video that is marked demonstration quality the dancers turn the third couple in only two bars. I am assuming this is what the devisor intended but it is not how the dance is often done in my experience. I suggest the cribs should make precise what is intended.

This may be due to evolution of the instructions. The Ayr Branch 75 Anniversary book has:

9-12: 1st and 2nd women turn with the left hand as 1st and 2nd men turn with the right hand. 1st couple join nearer hands by the end of bar 12 as 2nd couple finish in top place.
13-16: 1st couple dance down, 1st and 3rd women turn with the left hand as 1st and 3rd men turn with the right hand. 1st couple pass by the left shoulder to face first corners.

That does suggest dancing down before turning, through does not specify how many bars for the turn.

However the instructions in Book 47 are:

9-12: 1st and 2nd men, giving right hands, 1st and 2nd women, giving left hands, turn once round. On bar 12, 1st couple dance down to second place and 2nd couple cast up to first place.
13-16: 1st and 3rd men, giving right hands, 1st and 3rd women, giving left hands, turn once round. On bar 16, 1st couple pass by the left to face first comers.

I imagine the crib writers consider the RSCDS publication as more definitive and that suggests longer turns than in the summer school demo quality video with 1st couple dancing down on bar 12 rather than from bar 13.

Both that video and Book 47 were published in 2013 so its surprising the video seems not to follow the instructions in Book 47. Maybe the devisers preferred their original but the RSCDS decided to change anyway?

Unless someone else knows better I would be inclined to add a comment to the video rather than change the cribs. Either way if there are two slightly different versions dancers will probably do as they please or as they were once taught.
