Issue 284: The Duchess of Gordon. Tune by D Dow?

Description

The Traditional Tune Archive claims that the tune was really written by Daniel (or Donald) Dow. I’m generally inclined to trust Andrew Kuntz over the Society (especially with a dodgy publication like the Border Book) but we should eventually look into this.

Just adding research here. Tunearch.org doesn’t even say that is was WRITTEN bei Daniel/Donald Glow. They state here https://tunearch.org/wiki/Annotation:Duchess_of_Gordon_(1)_(The) : || However, the tune was earlier printed without attribution in Donald (sometimes Daniel) Dow’s collection as “The Black Girl is Not Cheerful.” ||
abcnotation credits it to Daniel Dow: https://abcnotation.com/tunePage?a=trillian.mit.edu/~jc/music/session/Top/strathspey/Duchess_of_Gordon_1-D-16-3/0000
The following page lists TWO tunes of that name, one of it attributed to “Dow” (A) , the other - tadah - mentions a McGlashan, but still names “Donald Dow (sometimes misgiven as Daniel)” (B). (A) is in D minor, (B) in D major.
Scans of the McGlashan book can be found here: https://hms.scot/prints/copy/13/ and it looks as if he was just the PUBLISHER, not the composer. All in all, it is safe to assume that “McGlashan” IS incorrect.
