Issue 2869: Cadgers in the Canongate: Transition between first and second reels

Object
Cadgers in the Canongate (Dance)
Submitter
Anthea Macdonald (dancefilly)
Assigned to
Murrough Landon
Priority
Normal
Disposition
Fixed
Description

All three “Demonstration Quality” videos show a non-standard transition between the first and second reels, with first couple crossing back to their own sides on bar 8. In contrast, the “Informal/Social” video and the DancieMation show this transition occurring on bar 9. The original notes to the dance seem unambiguous in saying that the second option is correct.

So maybe a note could be added to each of the Demonstration Quality videos mentioning this slight break with traditional phrasing, possibly done for demonstration purposes.

Thanks, Doug Macdonald

Thanks for the comment. Looking at the version I have access to (2009 edition of Book 9) there is a note for bars 1-8 which says that “in some areas” 1st couple cross back to own sides on bar 8. So it is clearly considered acceptable. And perhaps the one usually done in Edinburgh where I believe the Canongate is?

Anyway I have added a comment to those three Edinburgh videos that they are doing this variation. And I found (via SCD dictionary) that there is another video from the international team at Newcastle which does the standard version of 1-8. So I added that to the database as well.
