Mark, before I add something here - can you double check with our dance number 6959 whether this description/crib meets half way with your CD version dance description? We have errors around that dance anyway. The crib in its headline states 40 bars, yet the crib itself shows 48 bars of description (which is why I JUST changed the dance to 48 bars as per some other issue submission). The recording we have connected til now is 32 bars; I will change that too.

It’s clearly derived from 6959. The difference is bars 5–8 and 13–16, which are given as:

5–8 C1 & C2 right hands across; C3 turn right hands; C4 & C5 right hands across.

13–16 C1 & C2 left hands across; C3 turn left hands; C4 & C5 left hands across.

The recording is an R48×5, but the dance is describes as being a “Reel or Jig”.

As a way out of this, I’d suggest we follow the example of The Flying Scotsman, where there are two entries, one for the original dance devised by Hugh Thurston (2260) and one for the simplified version created by the R.S.C.D.S. (18497). Maybe call this dance “The Waves of Tory (simplified)”.

The other solution would be link this recording to dance 6959, and add a second crib for the simplified version. The problem with this is that there’s no way of annotating the crib in it’s title, only in the body of the crib.

Cheers,

Mark

BTW, the add crib dialog contains the instruction “Use ACE markup here”. Is there a reference to the ACE markup syntax, 'coz my Google Fu is drawing a blank (all I find is some references to an “ACE” editor that appears to be a code editor that can be embedded in web pages).

Ace markup documentation to find here: https://my.strathspey.org/docs/

Write bars e.g. “1-8”, then colon twice, then description, then new paragraph. Surrounding a word with underscores makes it bold, good for “while” or equivalent signal words. Not sure how to deal with lots of variants for the same dance. Will discuss it with the team, so no quick solution here. Plz do not add an additional crib for now. Cribs need to be condensed, no full descriptions in crib format please. Minicrib has good guidelines on how to do that in their style.

Hi Mark, this dance caused us quite some discussions in the last few days. There is an Irish dance of this name, and an English Dance too. Both structures are not suitable to SCD. The best and most spread Scottish version seems to be the one in Video 1 which comes from the RSCDS archive. Apart from that, this is very “floating” dance with many variations and basically not many things edged in stone, so many people felt free to throw 8 bars out and put 8 bars in which are related, yet not a full copy of Irish or English bits and pieces (as seems to be the case with YOUR version of it). It is impossible to collect all variations for such a dance or add them equally to the database.
The team’s decision is more or less that I amended the database entry for this dance quite heavily so that video 1 and the overall dance data fit with the crib (no changes here), and notes have been amended too. So, in this special case, we will not add the additional description from that CD for the time being.
