Description

Hi. When I looked up recordings for Barbara’s Strathspey it is showing our band recording for Lady Lucy Ramsay in the list. Is there a reason or is this an error? Since this is an RSCDS Book 46 dance it seems strange to show our recording of Lady Lucy Ramsay there?

Thanks,

Meryl Thomson

Hi Meryl, this record must have been created a long time ago. Sue Kinnell herself wished for this recording when she wrote the dance, see https://suedan.com/dances/instructions/barbarasstrathspey.html … When it became part of book 46, a special tune and recording was made for this dance, yet, originally, this was Sue suggested. I will have to ask the team members with more experience how this is to be dealt with in our database. For the time being I will keep the connection. BTW your recording is associated with a few other dances than the one it is meant to be for which means other devisers suggested your recording as their favourite dance companion …

It is not uncommon for a dance to be published with a recommendation of an existing tune or recording, but then to acquire its own tune later. With tunes, our general approach is to link both tunes with annotations saying, e.g., “Originally suggested by deviser” and “Published in RSCDS book”. We can’t (yet) do this for recordings, but in this case I’d link Lady Lucy Ramsay as a tune (with a note), and probably leave the link to the Green Ginger recording, too; this might be helpful to people who don’t have the official RSCDS recording of the dance to hand.

(It would be nice if the database could locate recordings of the appropriate tune for a dance with the appropriate number of bars even if the recordings aren’t explicitly linked to the dance. Perhaps at some point in the future.)

Thanks Anselm for the comments. I added a second tune and filled in the “comment” section for both tunes plus amended the extra info with regard to the RECORDING as the original suggestion.
