I’ve always been intrigued by the title of this tune. Who was John Stephen, and whuch Chance Inn? There is a house atof this nameat Chapel Hill, between St Madoes and Errol in the Carse of Gowrie near to where we live. A chance meeting with a couplewho live close to Chance Inn and are involed in dancing confirmed that this was the right John Stephen and the right Chance Inn. Angus Fitchett was a great socialiser and had many friends in the area. The story goes that Angus presented John with two tunes and asked which he preferred. John said “That one” and Angus replie that “Thats called John Stephen of Chance Inn!” The dance is a different matter, and John Drewry may have has a different John Steohen in mind!
