Description

When checking possible duplicate tune entries mentioned in issue 3142 (https://my.strathspey.org/dd/issue/3142/) I noticed we also have a variety of possible duplicate persons.

In addition to this entry (“John MacDonald”) there is also:
J MacDonald (https://my.strathspey.org/dd/person/2595/)
MacDonald J (https://my.strathspey.org/dd/person/10060/) which looks like my mistake? J R MacDonald (https://my.strathspey.org/dd/person/2265/)

All of them have tunes to their name. That is no guarantee they are all the same person, but it would be worth trying to check.

https://my.strathspey.org/dd/person/2595/#tunes Mull of the Cool High Bens J. Macdonald (1883-1940) http://www.lewessaturdayfolkclub.org/LAFC/ZoomPDF/Mull%20of%20the%20Cool%20High%20Bens%20[D].pdf

BUT the same person can’t be the composer of “The 79’s Farewell”, as this was published in 1854 (whereas the above was born in 1883), so there is an error here

The same person has a tune named “Pipe Major William Grey’s Farewell to Cowal” which is obviously not existing, just a wrond transkription error from a recording, where the name of the second tune or a source has been taken over to the tune name. https://open.spotify.com/intl-de/track/0liQkgCqmUJk5F7OGuOiwp The tune is actually the same as “Pipe Major Willie Gray’s Farewell to the City of Glasgow Police” (11046) BUT BUT BUT which is attributed to a different person (10060). Person 10060 on the other hand has only ONE other tune in his name, “The Debt Collector”. It appears on a quite new recording as second tune of track 6 here https://music.apple.com/gb/album/button-box-reels-the-debt-collector-the-plough/1505736312?i=1505736318, and to make things worse, it adds “feat. John Macdonald” at the the end for a recording from 2019, which means most likely this might be person 10060, but for sure not the same person that composed the Glasgow Police thing which it is attributed for. The persons who wrote hte “Glasgow City” thing and “The 79s Farewell” are not the same and are both pipe majors, where as “The Debt Collector” author doesn’t seem to be a pipe major.

Conclusion: we HAVE multiple John MacDonalds and John Macdonalds from various time periods with various musical skills, some PMs, some not, BUT it is very very likely that none of the tune/person attributions are correct or make sense. I think we would have to identify and name the various John’s first to distinguish them by name and then try to adjust the tune attributions which is a bit tricky… I do not feel 100% confident to start this …
