Issue 3188: Deletion of First Video

Object
Niles Roberts' Farewell to Pasadena (Dance)
Submitter
Anthea Macdonald (dancefilly)
Assigned to
Anselm Lingnau
Priority
Normal
Disposition
Being handled
Description

I’m thinking that the first video for this dance, dated 12/23/2023 12:34 am, should be deleted, so that the Society video shows up as the first on the list. This video uses early, informally recorded, music for the dance, so it’s probably not appropriate for it to be on the site permanently.

If it’s OK, I’d prefer that the third video, dated 12/23/2023 12:36 am, be retained. This video is rated “Good” since it doesn’t use the prescribed music, but it’s the music I’ve played for decades, so I’d like it to survive. Please let me know if that’s within your guidelines, and thanks very much for your help.

Assigned changed to “anselm” (previously “None”)

It seems a pity to remove (or downgrade) a good video just to make another one come up first however understandable the motive.

Before doing so I am assigning this to Anselm. There have in the past been suggestions it would be good if there was a way of making an “editor’s pick” of the preferred video among several dem quality ones. Another possibility would be a second ranking score (for each video) incorporating other qualities such as clarity, good view, easily identifiable dancers, usefulness for learning the dance, etc.

Another possibility is for Anthea to take the video off YouTube OR making it “private” only. It would take the decision of availability off our hands. I am also hesitant in taking resources off the site, no matter how good the dancing or how “original” the music is. It might always be helpful to someone.

Disposition changed to “Being handled” (previously “New”)

SCDDB has a video category “Blocked, do not re-add”, but that is only used for videos that are of such poor quality (in dancing, or in video technique) that they are obviously of no use to anybody.
In the thumbnail display of all videos of a dance, they are arranged automatically in order of descending quality (Demonstration quality; Good; Reasonable; …), In principle, only videos that use the “official tune” can be classified as “demonstration quality”. The RSCDS video can be recognized by its thumbnail. In this case all three videos are really worth keeping. I suggest that Doug and Anthea express their opinions as notes that can be added to each video; then all users can make their own choices.
