Issue 3215: Incorrect Formations specified

Object
The Earl of Arran (Dance)
Submitter
Iain Boyd (iain_boyd)
Assigned to
Eric Ferguson
Priority
Normal
Disposition
Fixed
Description

The two half chain figures are NOT a “half ladies’ chain” nor a “half men’s chain” as specified under Formations on the overview page(although they could be specified as variations of the ladies’ chain on the diagonal).

I described them in “The Kilmarnock Album” as a “half right-handed mixed chain on the diagonal with second corners” and a “half left-handed mixed chain on the diagonal with second corners”.

They are the same figures as used by Tom Toriyama in his dance “Elspeth Gray’s Reel” recently published in Book 53.

Keith Rose calls the first chain in his diagrams for “Elspeth Gray’s Reel” a "Half diagonal mixed chain.

What ever Formation is specified in the future for these figures in “Elspeth Gray’s Reel” should be used to describe the same figures in my dance.

I have added an e-crib, and “Extra Info” explaining why “Overview” now has incorrect formation names. If no exact formation name is available, we often name a formation of which the dance has a “variant”.
We have a (fairly recently established) convention NOT to any formation by naming a dance in which it (first?) appeared. In the planned new formation system for SCDDB a suitable name will be chosen. Could Iain please respond if the e-crib or the comments could be improved. All other comments are welcome too. Eric

Dear Eric,

My apologies, BUT, please remove the new crib you produced for “The Earl Of Arran”.

I feel very strongly about the ‘willy nilly’ production of cribs and diagrams along with the availability of poor quality videos.

I have no problems with cribs and diagrams being produced as ‘aide memoire’ for social dances.

However, many teachers are now using the cribs and diagrams to teach from rather than purchasing the original publication - even when the publication is still readily available for sale!

I do have to admit that the cribs and diagrams can often be better than the original instructions, but, it is the principal of the universal availability of them that I object to.

Consequently, please, no more new cribs and diagrams without my personal permission!

Regards,

Iain
