Description

This was published in John Riddle’s 1782 collection, where he claimed to be the composer, and this was perpetuated in Neil Gow’s Compleat Collection where it was attributed to “Jo. Riddell”.

However, the same tune was published as “BallGownie’s Bowling Green” in c. 1775 by Rutherford, and as “Balgeny’s Bouling Green” in c. 1757 by Bremner.

Given the Bremner appears to be the earliest publication, the tune should be credited to 442 Robert Bremner.

Stet.

I’ve found some evidence that Bremner published a number of Riddle’s earliest tunes without giving credit, so it’s still possible that this is a Riddle tune.
