Description

Albums 39 The Shores of Loch Alvie and 413 Scottish Country Dancing are (nearly) identical releases under different names.

All bar one of the tracks are identical, but some have been duplicated in the database:

  • 552 The Hollin Buss is a duplicate of 1169 The Hollin Buss.
  • 553 Valeta: Pierette is a mis-spelt duplicate of 1172 Veleta.
  • 556 A Highland Medley is a duplicate of 1174 A Highland Medley.
  • 556 Achill Island is a duplicate of 1170 Air (the tune is Achill Island).
  • 565 The Eightsome Reel is a duplicate of 1176 The Eightsome Reel.

The awkward one (and the only track that has a different track listing) is the last track. Recording 571 Dundee Eight Hundred on The Shores of Loch Alvie lists the first tune as “The Road to Dundee” by John Hall. Recording 1177 Dundee Eight Hundred on Scottish Country Dancing lists the first tune as “The Road and the Miles to Dundee” by Willie Kemp. Willie Kemp was a singer (there’s a YouTube video where someone playes a 78 shellac recording of him singing the song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqS-CM0lC3A).

According to Wikipedia, the two are alternative names for the same traditional Scottish folk ballad (Roud 2300).

I’d suggest merging tunes 1525 and recordings 571 and 7078 as duplicates, with the name given as The Road (and the Miles) to Dundee and the composer as Traditional, and then merging recordings 571 and 1177 as duplicates.
