Description

Good evening, I was going through some recordings I hadn’t listened to in a while and, as this used to be a favorite of mine, I turned up the volume. Hogtie’s Reel is listed as the second tune but is actually the third (see Green Ginger’s 6x32 reels for dancing on Miss Ogilvie, as well as thesession.org for sound clips), the 4th tune is The Blackberry Bush (listed as the 3rd tune, thesession also has a lovely recording of this for verification), and I’d like to say Bert Murray the Fiddler, the listed 4th tune, is in 2nd place but the Willie Hunter recording I have is not the same tune. Anselm, if you read this, I love that the search feature now takes into account not just the various differences in spellings, but also misspellings and those times when spell check tries to “help.”

I quickly checked the insert of the CD I have and the tunes are listed there in the order the database has them. I can try asking Ian Muir why the insert used that order. And about the Bert Murray tune.

I had a very prompt reply from Ian Muir:

"Interesting.

The tune in question is called the Auld Fiddler by Willie Maguire. The naming mistake only emerged when Jim Lindsay recorded it for Book 49 (McDonald of Keppoch) which flagged up that we had the wrong name.

However Holly is wrong on her suggested ordering of the tunes.

They are (as per the insert)
The Legendary Anthony Cassidy (written by Keith Anderson - fiddler in the band - and is a 64-bar tune)
Hogties - Phil Cunningham
The Blackberry Bush
The Auld Fiddler - Willie Maguire

Hope that helps".

So I have replaced the 4th tune with The Auld Fiddler and added an extra info note.

Many thanks Holly for such a carefully researched comment!
