Description

The e-cribs team received the following email from William Barber:

“I understand that the original dance was 2/3L dance inspired by music that was 6x32. But the RSCDS book 53 and the Book 53 recording is 8x32. i.d. 2/4L”.

Adding it as an issue as it concerns the dance entry rather than the crib.

There isn’t really a lot we can do about this. I guess we should change the dance entry to read 2/4L – possibly with a note in “Extra Info” to the effect that the dance started out as a 2/3L – because that’s how most people will be doing the dance based on Book 53, and insisting on it really being 2/3L would just be confusing. Some people will probably do it as a 2/3L because they do all 2-couple strathspeys as 2/3L, but that’s their problem.

(We should assume that the deviser is OK with the Society republishing the dance as a 2/4L because MSC convinced them that’s what the Society does with 2-couple dances. The era of the Society simply unilaterally making such a change without bothering to find out what the deviser thinks is, hopefully, long past; certainly in my time as convenor of MSC we tried to collaborate very closely with dance devisers and I do hope that my successors have kept this up.)

I have updated the dance to 2/4L set shape. I also added a note that the deviser’s original choice of music was replaced by the RSCDS when publishing the dance in Book 53.

Indeed I hope the deviser was OK with this - but it still seems a little high handed to me. Despite the dance being inspired by the music there are no tunes in common between the original 6x32 and the RSCDS 8x32 recordings. And when looking earlier I noticed they managed to slightly misspell the deviser’s name on the RSCDS centenary video (https://my.strathspey.org/dd/dancevideo/9796/).

Keith, perhaps you would like to update your diagram to 8x32 and 2C/4C set in the light of the above?
