Issue 55: Jacobite Book (Barry Priddey): several versions

Object
Jacobite Book of Scottish Country Dances (Publication)
Submitter
Adrian Conrad
Assigned to

Priority
Normal
Disposition

Description

I have hardcopy of this book and beg to report that it only contains 8 dances (unless re-issued later with more), otherwise The Merry Ploughboy is NOT No.9 in this book. I fancy this dance was only published in SCD Archives No. 134. Your entry for the dance carries has the mistaken(?) attribution as No 9 in the Jacobite Book as well as the correct SDA attribution. The URL pointer about what it means to “adopt” this book is unresolved, but if I can help I’ll be happy to do so. Adrian

My copy of the Jacobite Book does have The Merry Ploughboy as dance no. 9. It seems that there may be different versions of the book around.

Apart from the the known editions of “the jacobite book” with and without dance 9, no reports of yet other versions have come to light. I am closing this issue, considering it as “fixed”. Eric

I have a hard copy with 8 dances, under contents the dances are numbered 1 to 8 and have been given a page number. in scddb the dances have an order and a page number that is different. If dance nr 9 The Merry Ploughboxwas skipped or later added one would expect order and the other page numbers to be the same, but they are NOT. I suggest to only put the dance number in the scddb with – if necessary – a extra remark. Below I will give the dance number and pagenumber in my copy. PS what is generally done? If dances are numbered?
If not numbered I imagine the page is easiest. Name 4 Jacobite Reel nr 1 page 5 6 The Iron Horse nr 3 p 7 8 The Border Barque nr 6 p 10 + 11 10 Turn Ye To Me nr 7 p 12 +13 12 Piper’s Brae nr 2 p 6 13 The Selkie Wife nr 4 p 8 14 The Mercat Cross nr 5 p 9 15 The Falls of Bracklinn nr 8 p 14 16 The Merry Ploughboy — ---- Showing 1 to 9 of 9 entries

Of my copy P 1(unnumbered) is titlepage, p 2 (unnumbered) is blanc, p 3 (unnumbered) is contents, p 4 (unnumbered) is blanc, p 5 is dance 1 etc.

As some of the dances do not have recommended music = tunes (alas NO recommended recordings in scdd,) I simply give below what p 15 says “The recordings used for the dances in this book have been as follows: – perhaps someone good at tunes can work this info into tunes?

  1. Jacobite The Blarney Reel – Andrew Rankine
  2. Piper’s Brae Marquis of Lorne – Jim Nicholson
  3. The IronHorse Shetland Reels – Ian Powrie
  4. The Selkie Wife The Cornet’s Lass – Maple Leaf
  5. The Mercat Cross St Johnstoun Reel – Ian Powrie
  6. The Borer Barque Ship o’Grace – Jimmy Blair
  7. Turn Ye to me McGuire’s Jig – Ian Holmes (this medley need lowing down considerably because of the iffiulty of this dance)
  8. Falls of Bracklinn The Conundrum – David White.
