Issue 846: Comeback Jig - Crib correction

Description

I believe that in bars 9-16 and 25-32 the term “twirl” is problematic. In the original instructions it says “All 3 couples dance around their partner, passing right shoulder to gypsy right, finish on own side”. Gypsy does in my view not mean that you twirl, it is like a two hand turn without hands (that was an explanation given to me by Ron Wallace).

I have added a crib based on the original text (see the text above). I take that to mean "dance round P Rsh to Rsh, and face P. Then cast away to own sideline. I think that could just as well be called a “twirl”. That last bit is the same movement as in “Half turn and cast away” of the Argyll Strathspey.

I have read the next words “13 -16 All 3 couples dance a track, clockwise, ½ way around all finish on opposite side, order 3, 1, 2” as a simple chase.

Issue fixed unless someone has new information to add. Eric

I’ve actually danced that dance, and I’m quite positive that we’re dealing with gypsy turns (i.e., the track of a turn giving right hands – on bars 9-12 – or left hands – on bars 29-32 –, except you’re not actually giving hands), like Kirsten describes, and not the movement from the Argyll Strathspey. No twirling involved. (The MiniCrib has that wrong, too.)

Note that everyone starts and ends on own sides. It would probably be possible, if one wanted, to do the Argyll Strathspey movement and end up on the side where one started rather than the opposite side, but I wouldn’t consider this a “gentle” dance or appropriate for someone who just had major spine/neck surgery, as the explanation in the book says.

I’m reopening that ticket now until the crib is fixed to reflect the actual dance.

Both Minicrib an my crib now show the no-hand (gypsy) turns correctly. Fixed. Eric
