It seems to me that there is a mistake in the diagram, specifically the second eight bars of the first figure. According to the description in “The Brodie Book”, the head couples finish bar 12 not in original places but in the middle of the set facing the side couples (1st couple facing 4th couple and 3rd couple facing 2nd couple). The book specifically says that during bars 13–16, the side couples dance “on small circular tracks” to pass the head couple by the right shoulder and then return to place. I realise that this is more messy to draw but it would be more accurate.
