Composed in 1848 when the regiment – the “Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders” – received orders to leave Gibraltar. They were supposed to go to the West Indies (not a desirable posting due to the unhealthy climate) but eventually were posted to Canada, after an intervention by the Secretary of State, who happened to be a veteran of the regiment and the brother of its CO.
