"The Freiburg Scottish Country Dance Group was founded in 1976 by a couple of enthusiastic folk dancers returning from their inspiring experience at the RSCDS Summer School in St. Andrews. Over four decades later, these members are still with us.
We dance on Wednesday evenings from 19.00 to 20.30 h in the spacious modern hall of St. Peter and Paul Church, Bozener Strasse 6, in the St. Georgen area of Freiburg. There are usually two to three sets plus an occiasional beginners’ class. A varied selection of dances – old and new, fun and challenging – are taught. This is followed by a get-together at the cosy local pizzeria, or outdoors on a terrace in the summer.
There is a friendly, family atmosphere in the group. We enjoy a wide range of social activities such as local wine festivals, hikes in the beautiful Black Forest, trips to vineyards over the border in Alsace, Christmas party, summer dance, day school and workshops.
Our legendary Midwinter Ball in February with delightful live music attracts up to 150 dancers from countries near and far. Due to its great popularity the ball is held in the large Kurhaus in the nearby village of Kirchzarten.
We have five dedicated teachers, which gives us the luxury of dancing non-stop throughout the year. It’s a pleasure for us to have visitors – so you’ll always be sure of a warm welcome here!
The distances in this list are geodesic distances (“as the crow flies”) between places with dance groups, rather than road distances between dance venues. Also note that while there may be several dance groups in the same town or city, their dance venues may be distant from one another even though they are all lumped together under one marker on the map.
