“She lets thee to wit that she has thee forgot,
And for ever disowns thee, her ain Jock Rab.”
O, had I ne’er seen thee, my Eppie Macnab!

As light as the air and as fause as thou’s fair,
Thou’s broken the heart o’ thy ain Jock Rab!
This song, written by Robert Burns in 1791 and included in James Johnson’s The Scots Musical Museum, Volume 4 (1792) was according to William Stenhouse “a substitute for the old song, which, he (Burns) justly observes, had more wit than decency”.
The original, which can be found in several ballad collections, begins:
O saw ye my Eppie McNab, McNab?
O saw ye my Eppie McNab, McNab?
She’s down i’ the yeard, she’s kissen the laird,
As whilom’s wi’ honest Jock Rob, Jock Rob.
The next three verses show a rapid deterioration in content.
Carolina Oliphant, Baroness Nairne (1766–1845) wrote another polite version of “Eppie Macnab” which does not vary a great deal from the spirit of Burns’ song. The first verse goes:
O mind ye nae, mind ye nae, Eppie Macnab?
It’s no sae lang syne yet, O Eppie Macnab,
Sin’ your een they shone bricht, and your heart it lapt licht,
Gin ye’d seen but the shadow o’ blythe Jock Rab.
