Ardnahoe is the newest of the Inner Hebridean Isle of Islay’s many whisky distilleries, which is located along the Sound of Islay just north of Port Askaig. It takes its name from its geographic location, literally meaning height (ard) of the hollow (hoe), which is, though close to sea level, a spot of high ground (on which was built the distillery) separating a small freshwater loch from the saltwater sound. The lower location of the loch itself and the immediate land around it can be taken to be the hollow. It is from this small freshwater loch that the distillery draws its water.
