Issue 1262: identical dances "Cumberland Square"?
- Object
- The Cumberland Square Eight (Dance)

- Description

It looks like “The Cumberland Square Eight” (13564) and “Cumberland Square” (1479) are actually the same dances. At least the E-Crib looks identical, except that the latter is more detailed on the “basket swing” (see my earlier issue).
Best wishes, Heiko

Indeed these dance entries are very similar; they are obviously the same dance. As often with Ceilidh dances, there are lots of variants. As soon as I have time I will merge the two entries.

I have nearly completed the merging, but need your help. The combined entry is “The Cumberland Square Eight 1479”
Several questions.
-
The second entry, to be deleted, is now “empty” and carries the temporary name “Cumberland Square13564”. I am not allowed to delete it yet because there are still 5 “related items” marked “Dance list item: Cumberland Square13564”. [Aside: I have not seen that before, in the past such links referred to “collection” not “List item”.] ANSELM, can you please handle this, or tell me how to move these links to dance 1479 ?
-
To you all: Which is the MAIN name: “Cumberland Square Eight” or “Cumberland Square”, and WITH or WITHOUT a "The " ? This is important as SCDDB and Minicrib must use the same name (for a successful automatic match), At the moment I am (arbitrarily) using “Cumberland Square Eight, The” to match the current Minicrib name.
-
Does anyone have information on which is the MAIN version and on what variants exist?
-
Is the dance devised by John Keppie or “Traditional”? Who knows?
Thanks for helping. Eric

Ad 4: John Keppie is not the devisor. In the Annapolis book he states “This is a North Country dance arranged for Scottish Country dancing.” So he just wrote it up.
Ad 3: Since the above version is published and can thus be referenced, it might suit well as as the MAIN version.
Cheers, Heiko

I’ve moved the dance list items in question over to the consolidated The Cumberland Square Eight entry. (Right now this operation needs direct database access and so only I can do it.)
Ad 2. The dance is properly called “Cumberland Square Eight” (with or without the “The”). I’d probably lean towards including the article but it doesn’t matter as far as crib matching is concerned.

The previous 4 points have been settled:
- Solved by Anselm. The duplicate dance 13564 has been deleted.
- On Anselm’s advice the main name is now “The Cumberland Square Eight”, although my copy of “Burns Night in the Annapolis Valley [7]” reads “Cumberland Square”.
- Using “Burns Night in the Annapolis Valley [7]” as main source, the “Extra Info” has been revised and the e-crib has been renewed,
- Heiko’s comment makes clear the dance is “traditional”.
This dance has many variants. Both cribs mention several variants, derived from various sources or seen on video.
REQUEST. Please read the entry, and please suggest useful improvements.
