Description

Thank you for including my dance in the database. I corresponded with Anton Korobeynikov from St Petersburg in June, but I have suggested some additions to the entry that the rest of the mods might as well know about. If the database can accept Cyrillic characters and you think it’s sensible to use them, the name of the dance really is ‘Калан и Манул’, else ‘Kalan i Manul’. The English translation, ‘The Sea Otter & the Pallas Cat’, probably goes into ‘also known as’. I declare the ‘original’ tune to be ‘Sandy’s Bounty’ (played AABB) http://my.strathspey.org/dd/tune/5504/, which is by Pipe Major James Warden Pirie, not Trad. as the tune’s entry suggests. No recording (apart from my own one on my site) begins with this tune; I have used http://my.strathspey.org/dd/recording/9913/ for the couple of times it’s been on a programme. http://my.strathspey.org/dd/recording/5441/ would also be suitable - it has a clearer rhythm than the StringFire! track. I intended the barring for the first eight bars to be: set [2 bars], cast/chase [3 bars], turn [3 bars]. My latest version of the instructions should always be obtainable at https://sites.google.com/site/thefollyofrogues/kalan-i-manul

Just for the record, the database has no problems dealing with Cyrillic characters but in general we prefer the “main” title of a dance to be in Latin script; the Cyrillic title should go in as a “spelling alias” and the English translation as a “translation alias”.

Thanks for the additional information, which I have incorporated into the database.
