This reads as if Terry Glasspool did the modification – I would like to see the actual deviser of this version listed, as well as the original ref to Terry.

I changed the “Notes” section to reflect that Luitgard Merkens (whom I know from long ago) did this adaptation. I didn’t put her into “author” status though, as on the Münster website, Glasspool is still listed as author of the dance and Luitgard as the one to have adapted it.

Would it not be fitting to explain the “adaptation” and include the name of Luitgard Merkens in the “Extra Info” tab of this dance? I am sure the Münster website would allow us to copy their information. It would be useful to add an e-crib and preferably also a diagram, as otherwise the dance is hard to follow. Where is this “Notes” section? I only know “Extra Info”.

Hi Eric, Im happy to write an E-crib. As for “Extra Info” vs "Notes. The Admin website uses “Notes” but “Extra Info” is what is shown on the web page. An internal inconsistency only seen by editors. However whatever the terminology actually I do not see Viktor’s comment on the web page…?

Heck, I don’t know what happened and why my changes were gone. I changed the “Extra Info” again.

Hi all,

wouldn’t it be nice to list both Terry and Luitgard in the deviser entry? This would also follow the Münster webpage where they have both at the top of the dance, Terry but also Luitgard.

This would serve two points:

(a) the dance can be found searching for either Luitgard or Terry as deviser (people who know Luitgard would possibly search for her - and with the current solution this doesn’t work), and

(b) both get credits as devisers for contributing to this final variation (there are dances that differ less, but have different devisers and there are a number of variations to other dances that have been attributed solely to the persons who came up with them).

Otherwise I have no objections to Bruce’s suggestion to attribute it to Luitgard and keep a link in Extra Info / Notes.

Just my tuppence worth - what do the others think.

Best wishes, Heiko

In the database, dances can have only one author (which could be an individual or a group). If we wanted to credit this dance to both Terry and Luitgard, we would have to make a “group” containing the two, which would be stretching the concept somewhat but might be warranted in this instance.

The 1-to-n relationship between authors and dances goes back to the original data model designed by Alan Paterson, including the “group” hack – “people” in the database can be either individuals or groups of individuals, which includes dance bands but also author collectives. It would be perfectly possible to establish an m-to-n relationship between authors and dances (possibly even with additional information like “author”, “adapter”, or “collector” – which should make Stephen Webb happy in his ongoing McNab crusade ) but it would be a big change.

We would in any case have to keep the “dance bands are people” notion for albums and recordings because anything else would be unwieldy; people do think of dance bands as distinct entities and I’m surely not about to try tracking the evolution of dance band line-ups across the decades in order to be able to credit albums to the correct set of individuals playing on them. (Somebody who is after a musicology Ph.D. should feel free to pitch in here.)

Thanks Anselm. IMHO it is not necessary to shift the whole database setup for authors just because such instances happen. We already HAVE some “fake groups of authors” now and then, J W Mitchell for instance has one, Terry Glasspool himself as well. I created a couple’s “person”, yet kept the extra information as is. If you guys are not happy with that, just plz comment here and I will do further editing on this issue. Thanks Murrough for the e-crib. I pass this issue on to Keith Rose, asking if he feels like it to create a diagram for it.
