There appears to be considerable confusion between the tune, “The College Hornpipe”, and the tune “Jolly Tars”, which the Society has published for the dance, “The College Hornpipe”, in Book 20. These two tunes are completely unlike each other. (The tune, “The College Hornpipe”, a.k.a, “Jack’s the Lad” or simply “Sailor’s Hornpipe”, famously occurs in Sir Henry Wood’s Fantasia on British Sea Songs, a staple of the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms, where it is played by the orchestra with great gusto and increasing speed to the audience’s accompaniment of clapping and assorted other noises.)
Most of the purported recordings of this tune are actually recordings of “Jolly Tars”, especially when they’re meant for the dance, “The College Hornpipe”. These should be reassigned to “Jolly Tars” and the tune changed (with “The College Hornpipe” as an alias on the recording).

Hi Anselm, I wanted to go through all the recordings for “College Hornpipe” and realised there is NO option to put in an alias for the RECORDING, only for the tune. What shall I do?

For the typical case where the recording is called “College Hornpipe” and the band are playing the tune “Jolly Tars” but calling it “College Hornpipe” on the CD, what we want is a tune alias, and that should work.
A recording alias is needed if the CD says that a track is for dance X but really contains music for dance Y. For example, on the ill-fated DuK CD for dances from Miss Milligan’s Miscellany, there is a recording of “Lady Susan Stewart’s Strathspey” which is (erroneously) labelled as “Trinity Hall” (after the lead tune). We would need a recording alias to be able to show this as “Lady Susan Stewart’s Strathspey (as ‘Trinity Hall’)” but that functionality doesn’t exist yet. It would be fairly straightforward to put in but would change the database schema for the daily dumps, which might have repercussions on software that consumes those, which is why I keep putting this off. I should probably collect all the schema-changing changes and do them all together so there isn’t a lot of schema churn.

@Anselm: EDITING PROBLEM. I created an alias “College Hornpipe, The” to “Jolly Tars”, and then tried to tweak the first recording by changing the lead tune vom “College” to “Jolly” - but when selecting “College” from the “Alias” dropdown, it won’t let me save the entry (“Please correct…”) OR it saves the entry, but not the alias with it.
I think it needs your attention…

Disposition changed to “Needs help” (previously “New”)
Thanks to Anselm for updating the database so that aliases on tunes can be set when editing recordings. I now changed all recordings for “The College Hornpipe”, when they showed the (incorrect) lead tune called “The College Hornpipe” to new lead tune “Jolly Tar (as The College Hornpipe)”.
There are two recordings though where none of the given tune names is set, and I don’t know if further changes are required here:

https://my.strathspey.org/dd/recording/7102/
(both most likely the same recordings on different albums)
