Issue 880: Tinker's Reel: How to lead round a line holding hands joined

Description

The original description [Ormskirk Memorial Edition, by Bob Donald] uses the wording "First man and fourth lady each lead their line round (clockwise) to the opposite side of the set. Apparently the two lines do not join as an “eight hands round”. Clowes does not say if this is danced in slip-step (the most convenient) or on skip-change (requiring an awkward twist of the body). Does anyone have additional information?

Given the online source and the diagrams there at https://www.rscdslondon.org.uk/sdata/dances/ormskirk/tinker.pdf , it seems quite obvious that it is two split lines moving with slip step (open circle style) to the other side. The way the hands are drawn in the diagram there is no other way to move. Right?

@e-crib team: could you dive into this as well? The e-crib talks about “chase” here, which is obviously not the case, given the descriptions and diagrams at https://www.rscdslondon.org.uk/sdata/dances/ormskirk/tinker.pdf … I would suggest to amend the e-crib to reflect that (as they join hands) the lines are changing sides with slip steps.

I agree its not really a normal chase figure if hands are joined. Slip step is probably more comfortable when nearer hands are joined, but some ceilidh dances, eg Gypsy Thread, have a hands joined chain travelling around either walking or with skip change (https://my.strathspey.org/dd/dancevideo/2775/).

I think the instructions are not explicit enough to be definitive which step is used. Instead of “1M & 4W lead clw chase ½ round” in the existing e-crib I might just write something like “1M & 4W lead their own line ½ way round clw”.

Thanks for this input - never came across such a version of holding hands and skip change at the same time! You have a valid point here - the wording could hint towards such a figure. Thanks for amending the e-crib though to be more along the original despription. Once this is done, and as no one seems to have additional input here on which steps are used, I will then “close” this ticket in some shape or form.

OK, I have now updated the e-crib as suggested.
