There was an obituary of John Drewry in The Scotsman: see https://www.scotsman.com/news/obituaries/obituary-john-drewry-scottish-dance-deviser-and-academic-1532036.
In a masterly piece of understatement, the citation by Aberdeen Branch supporting the award of the Society’s Scroll of Honour to John in 1999 begins:
“John is recognised world-wide as a deviser of dances and several of his dances have been published by the Society”. This, however, is typical of John’s own modesty.
He was born 14 July 1923 in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. He died aged 90 on 18 June 2014 in Aberdeen.
Chris Ronald writes, on 27 feb. 2018: Drewry fans may like to know that an index of his dances has just been placed by the Teachers’ Association (Canada) on their website. It can be seen at https://tac-rscds.org/index.php/special-topic/index-of-john-drewry-s-dances
An article on John by Stephen Webb appeared in issue 289 of The Reel.
An article in the April 2023 edition of the Orange County Ceilidh magazine has a link to collections of photographs taken by (or of) John Drewry and later uploaded by two of his friends. See https://www.flickr.com/photos/auchendean/collections/72157644424881229/.
